Welcome to my Saturday.
Himself and I went to the Van Cleef & Arpel exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum this morning and for a jewelry houndette like myself, it was almost like going to church.
Mystery-set diamonds (bet you don’t know what that is, do you? I didn’t, either. It’s when matched gems are grooved and set in channels so the setting is invisible) in platinum, rubies and diamonds in a bracelet so heavy you can’t imagine lifting your wrist (though Marlene Dietrich managed to do it, as it was her piece). Brooches in the shapes of mushrooms, birds on a branch, and feathers. Necklaces that turn into earrings and bracelets, brooches that can transform into rings, and on and on and on.
I was reduced to saying things like, “Wow.” “Himself, you gotta see this.” And my favorite, ” .” That’s when I was left speechless. Himself had to slowly but firmly guide me out of the museum at that point.
I have lots of jewelry and I often feel that the costume is as much fun and gives as much pleasure as the real stuff. But I have to admit that when you see these pieces – dramatically lit and gorgeously presented – there’s a difference when you rub up against the real thing. Amen!
